I first read this book back in 2011. I wanted to re-read one of my favorite authors who has not written a book in a while, but whose work I dearly enjoyed. Ms. Canham's name was at the top of my list. Having said that, I am prefacing my review with this. I LOVE the old, romantic, swashbuckling movies made in the 30's and 40's. They almost always contained a smart, strong, admirable hero and a stubborn, smart, and feisty heroine. There was always plenty of romance, adventure, gripping, edge-of-your seat battle/fight scenes, really clever, snappy dialogue, wonderful and quirky supporting characters and a fabulous story line. Oh, and the villains were always really bad guys that you could not wait to see get their just rewards. And, those old movies always had a happily-ever-after ending. Well, Ms. Canham consolidated all those elements into one book, so reminiscent of my favorite old movies that held me so captivated (and happily still do). I was delighted to discover that I still love this book! The twist to the Robin Hood legend is just being hinted at in this book and will be developed further in the next two books, as I recall, which I will be blissfully devouring in the next few days. I truly hope that Ms. Canham is soon back at her computer composing another fun and gripping book. Her writing is just too good for her not to continue to pursue. I am certain many of her devoted, eager fans would agree!

I usually don't read romance novels (although I do read a lot of fiction novels that might as well be classified as such, so this isn't a slam against romance novels, just something I don't usually read), but I like the Robin Hood legend and a reviewer I usually share tastes with recommended this one, so I decided to take a chance on this one. It wasn't horrible, but if you don't read romance novels I wouldn't recommend this. (mild dpoilers) The main romance happens pretty quickly, the prologue starts in media res so when you get back to that scene later on in the novel, the author covers way too much ground we've seen before and it's pretty much a slog to get through. From the reviews I thought it was going to be fun and light-hearted and fast-paced, and while it certainly wasn't particularly dark or slow, it wasn't particularly witty or fun either. If they were making a film of this it would be no heir to "The Adventures of Robin Hood" or "Captain Blood". (I AM thinking about reading the two sequels though, because they are apparently about side characters who, in this book, were much more interesting.
As an insatiable reader working on my own historical romance, I am constantly reading everything I can get my hands on, then taking the story and characters apart to see what I think worked well and what didn't. All writers have their good and bad points. One might be great with research or plot, but leave their characters a touch too unemotional, or worse, a touch too emotional. But in attempting to pick a part any of the 4 medieval romances written by Marsha Canham, Through A Dark Mist, The Shadow of Midnight, The Last Arrow (my favorite) and My Forever Love, I always come up against a dilemma; tamping down my hero worship long enough to objectively examine the storiy. It's difficult. I can read any one of these books and pick it up a week later to start my scholarly analysis, only to find myself falling back into the story, reading every word as if I didn't know exactly what was coming. To me, this is one of Marsha's best skills and I've seen it in all her books, not just the medieval ones. She has the ability to put words on paper in such a way that gives the reader a clear look into the characters desires and fears, often with humor and almost always with poignancy. Every part of her stories are extremely well researched (researching my own novel set in 1144, I've come to appreciate all the hard work, dedication and great memory required to write so accurately, especially without bogging the story down). But don't for a moment think that because Master Marsha can spend a fantastic story with an incredible plot while staying faithful to the time period, that her books must lack romance or passion. It seems terribly unfair that a writer who is so good in those areas should also be a master at romance and passion, but alas, she is. If her love scenes don't leave you sweating, then perhaps you should check yourself for a pulse.
I could go on and on, but since I'm in danger of being accused of hyperbole, I'll stop now and simply say; read the books. They're magical and entertaining and will remind you why you read romances.
Brothers are a strange lot on any normal day. However get brothers that were born by two mothers a few days apart and you have a feud inn the making. Lucien and Etienne were raised together. Unknowingly thinking all was great the oldest was envied by the younger. When drastic measures leaves Lucien dying in the desert sands Etienne takes his place as Lord De Gaurney. Wanting all that was denied him, he goes about it with the helpful greed of Prince John, who has the same jealousy. Enter the last straw, Servianne, the damsel worth a fight. She was awarded the final piece of property to restore the wealth that was taken in the name of greed.
With the backdrop of legend and medieval lore you have a great adventurous heart pounding story with great depth of characters, detail, and fight our flight storyline to give any reader or movie goer a way to visualize the story unfolding.
You will enjoy this story to me and again.
