Party of Five eBook Vasileios Kalampakas

I downloaded this novella when it was free for a weekend. Let me state this again, I downloaded a NOVELLA. Meaning, a small part of a larger story. The parts will come out one by one as the author is ready to publish them.

Why is this a five star? Well, first off price. You are only spending 99cents versus $5 to find out whether or not you like the story.
Second, the story is rather humorous. My interest has been grabbed and I am looking forward to part two. I don't give five stars to often, but I do give them.

The story starts off rather quick. With opening words you get the idea that something occured to the two main characters before the story had begun. You spend the first little bit finding out more history of what occured to put them there. I enjoyed the little remarks the characters do back and forth (bickering in some parts). I enjoyed the way the author added more characters to the party as they went along (certain encounters that are funny in one instance, sad in another, and "wierd" in another). You get the whole party of five before the novella is over. I would have to say Theo is my favorite character so far (that's the wierd encounter). Each of the party have their qwirks, their attitudes, their outlook in life. None of them are the same; meaning, no two are alike. No two have bad attitudes, no two are whimps. I don't feel any redundancy with what they are doing either.

Though the novella did jump a little bit (one moment they are in a big discussion after an incident, and the words are suddenly written that the characters did a quick job and are on their way somewhere else, when the job should have take a few hours). Hard to say what without giving away a bit of the story line.

It doesn't take you long to read this novella, it is only about 30,000 words. Final word, I enjoyed it. I will certainly be looking for part two.

Party of Five eBook Vasileios Kalampakas Reviews

I was given this book by the author in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Queen Lernea and her sister Parcifal have been exiled from their kingdom of Nimno by Lernea's new husband. Winceham Higginsbottom Abbermouth III, a dwarf, steals their money. As they chase after him to get their money back, they come to a bar where pirates come to extort the shopkeepers and the bar keep. They try to keep the pirates from extorting the townspeople but it goes wrong in Vasileios Kalamavakas' PARTY OF FIVE, book one of his PARTY OF FIVE series. The barkeep's son wants revenge for the death of his father on the pirate captain, Culliper, and Lernea and Parcifal have pledged their help. Winceham is made to join them by Ned, the son. Along the way they pick up a woodkin elf, Theo, whose village has been destroyed by the pirates.

PARTY OF FIVE defies classification. There is a little bit of everything here. It has science fiction, fantasy, steampunk, paranormal, and pirates. It is unique and I am not sure how I feel about it. I like the quirkiness of it. There is humor in it, also a plus. The characters are interesting but I am still having trouble putting them all in their places. There are times when I felt that I was coming into the middle of a scene and knowing some backstory about the characters would have helped. Simpler names would have helped. I will not even try to pronounce Theo's full name.

The plot is convoluted for a short work. It took me until the third section of the book to begin to determine what the plot was. The world building here is convoluted. I think Mr. Kalamvakas is trying to build his world on a need-to-know basis but it does not work. There seems to be no consistent rules in the first two sections. The world building does get better in the third section but it still needs work. Having some of the world building done and explained would have made the story easier to understand earlier in the book.

PARTY OF FIVE is the set up for this series. As the story went along it got better. I hope the rest of the series picks up from where PARTY OF FIVE leaves off and the confusion and convolutedness settle down. I can see a good series here once we understand this world, its characters, and what the ultimate goal for this band of five (not yet a merry band) is.
Just got my kindle and was looking for the free books to try it out and stumbled upon Party of Five.
Loved the characters hope to see them back for there next adventure.
Too cute. Too girl power. Like a hard core chick flick version of a fantasy novel. I gave up 30 or so pages in.
I absolutely loved this book from start to finish. The story was really interesting and quirky and the characters are so well developed and their interactions with each other are so well written and often quiet funny, especially between the sisters at the beginning of the book. The author has not only a great sense of humor but also a great writing style. What I liked the most about the author's style is one of the key ingredients I think all great writers should have - to be able to tell a story without literally just laying it out in front of you. The author used the characters interactions with each other to indirectly explain their back stories and develop them at the same time.
The characters themselves are really truly unique creations, I really liked Ned, especially his first appearance on stage which I though was really funny I found this novelette so easy to read and found myself at the end in no time. I would highly recommend this as a quick and entertaining read and I myself can't wait to read the next installment.
I bought this book for the cover art, I stayed for the quality writing. This book was not only entertaining, it also had a fantastic plot! I immediately fell in love with the witty banter between sisters Parcifal and Lernea! The story only gets more and more exciting as each new character of the party of five gets introduced. It's been so long since I'd read a story with pirates in it, but Party if Five really clenches that thirst. Kalampakas' fast-paced style will keep you wanting more. I can't wait to read the sequel!
