Roger Larssen wears the term "elitist" as a badge of honor. Born into a wealthy New England family and blessed with good looks, a world-class intellect, and prodigious musical talent, he once had the world at his feet. Now a working stiff in his thirties, he finds himself living a life of dull horizons and diminished expectations. His love of music- one of the two great passions of his life- has been destroyed by years of teaching disinterested and unmotivated students. And he came to discover that years of access to a steady supply of willing lovers- his other great passion- left him weary of women and disgusted with himself.
Roger thought that his marriage and religious conversion would be enough to give him a fresh start, to save him from the demons of his degenerate past, and to console him over the loss of his early promise as a composer. But when old flame Eileen Clark shows up at the same second-rate college where he has been exiled, she puts everything about his new life to the test. With the supports beneath the mask of his identity fracturing from the weight of his self-delusion, Roger’s world starts to collapse all around him. And, much to his surprise, the rest of the universe begins to follow suit.
Located somewhere between the collision of high philosophy and low humor of Robertson Davies’ "The Cornish Trilogy" and the fin de siècle melancholy of Evelyn Waugh’s "Brideshead Revisited," "The Baskets of Macarius" dissects the crumbling psyche of a man lost in the labyrinth of his own mind. Populated with foul-mouthed classicists, Thomas Hobbes-quoting muggers, and college presidents behaving very, very badly, this curious narrative explores the existential dread that dwells in the gulf between who we are and who we want to be.

I don't often read religious fiction, but I enjoyed this one. There are not many cliches; the characters reflect about God but steer clear of the usual rhetoric. The author is good at putting the reader in his world and in the minds of his characters. For the first two-thirds of the book I was very uncomfortable with the constant descriptions of women's bodies, until I realized that they were all filtered through the main character's mind. Parts of the book, especially the wacky college world of Coleson, are hilarious. Other parts are profoundly moving. I read the book straight through and then paused to reflect on myself--am I like the main character, a pious and well-meaning guy who's forgotten what makes life worthwhile? And how do I get at the truth?Product details
