There were quite a few passages where I laughed at witty wording, and several where I stopped to appreciate an insightful thought. The characters were well-developed and both believable and appealing. Even the lesser roles generally feel like more than cardboard cutouts, though unfortunately I'm not sure a happy ending of his own is likely for her brother, Colin's friend.
Colin is quite a different character from his older brother (hero of book 1). It's interesting to see his attitudes about mortals and assumptions about himself — he's 130, after all — change as he grows closer to the unconventional Reggie.
The not-just-a-ghost they find themselves up against is appropriately creepy and dangerous.
My only complaint about the book, in fact, was that I flipped what turned out to be the *last* page expecting to find one final scene, and had to blink and reread the last paragraph, saying to myself, "Okay, that works as an ending point, I guess, though it's just a happy expectation, not the event." I'm a cheapskate, with an already large Kindle queue, so I hadn't planned to get sister Judith's story (not as steeply discounted), right away, but after this abrupt ending (at 95%), and the book 3 excerpt which follows, perhaps I will.

I loved this book! The story is fun and I couldn't' put the book down. I've read both books in the Highland Dragon series and can't wait for the final book to come out. Great reading for anyone who enjoys Scottish historical romances.
This was the second story I've read by Isabel Cooper and they are really good and very unexpected. Reggie and Colin both have hidden talents and together they will be a force to be reckoned with. I'm glad they are getting a happy ever after.
Colin is a more laid back dragon than normally appeals but he and Reggie are a nice couple. No angst or pain just gentle love story with gothic ghost story for background.
Isabel Cooper is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors.
Good story but I would've liked to read more of an epilogue. Liked the characters and the plot of this book and look forward to the next.
Read this as part of the on-going project to help a friend develop a booklist for her group, Adult Children of Parents with PTSD. And wasn't I pleasantly surprised to find a dragon shapeshifter in it I do love dragons.
One word about the cover. It's a cliché. None of the book takes place in the Highlands and although the hero does wear a kilt to a formal affair, I am sick and tired of the half-naked guy in a kilt on almost every single book in which the hero is from the Highlands.
That said, I enjoyed it. The homosexual son has all my sympathy as his parents expect him to continue the family name. They ignore their daughter because she is female. So dysfunctional. But they expect her to marry well.
She is erudite, prone to dressing in men's clothing and climbing trees. She doesn't like Society much. He is a lazy man, forced to bestir himself but discovers hidden reservoirs of inner strength he had no idea he had.
There is a particularly nasty ghost who doesn't want to share at all.
Enjoyed it.
3.5/5 stars After reading and really enjoying Legend of the Highland Dragon, I was excited to read this one, the second in the series. I was a bit disappointed in the book, but still thought it was a pretty solid read.
Colin, brother to Stephen, was introduced in book one, and I was happy to see him get a book of his own. As he is not the heir to the title as Stephen is, his life has been a bit more unconventional then Stephen’s. Of course he is a dragon shifter, so that is unconventional in and of itself, but he has taken it a step further and has researched magic, and had a bit of of his own.
Because of this, a friend, Edmond, has invited him down to his parents home in the countryside of England. Seems the house is haunted by the previous homeowner’s family member, and his parents are understandably not happy with the situation. Edmond’s sister, Reggie has come down from London, as well. It’s kind of a Gothic house party with a twist. Everyone that has been invited, are there because of the haunting and if it seems to be just a fun weekend in the country well that’s because at times, that’s just what it is-with a focus on the supernatural.
The reader meets Reggie when she arrives by way of climbing a tree up to Colin’s bedroom’s balcony. She thinks she is in her brother’s room, and of course Colin is happily surprised by the visit. Reggie is spunky to the max, very attractive, and takes her mistake in stride. I loved her as a character-she was independent for this time period(1895) and thoroughly modern for the period as well. She’s twenty seven, lives by herself in London, and has been ruined in the eyes of society, and so has never married. Her second sight has a lot to do with the ruination. For his part, Colin is a hundred thirty something years old, with expectations of at least 400 years of life, he’s never married, is extremely handsome and is also very lonely. Colin and Reggie begin a fast friendship and proceed to become lovers-unbeknownst to the others at the house party.
For me the book dragged throughout most of the first part, and didn’t pick up again until about fifty percent into the read. Things were happening with the haunting of course, but I just got bored after awhile. Once things started coming to a head though, I did enjoy the read. I just think there should have been more-more romance, more of the haunting, and absolutely more of the dragon!
I would recommend this to adult paranormal romance readers, ones that don’t mind a slower pace in a book. I am looking forward to reading the brother’s sister Judith’s story, Night of the Highland Dragon, releasing soon. RabidReads.com
